A couple of weeks ago, Victoriah invited me to a shoot she was coordinating with a photographer called Stoney Darkstone. I'd never heard of him, but the concept sounded interesting, so I googled him. An hour later, having found his homepage and seen some of his incredible ideas and images, I was hooked. I messaged Victoriah, who responded with a couple of concept images from the proposed shoot, now named Project BOX.

Wow, not sure which blew me away further, the cost or these new images! At this point, I knew this was something I had to be a part of... Cue the sale of large amounts of surplus camera gear, and the start of a three-week tuna and baked bean money-saving diet! I made the deadline, paid the money and secured my place on the event.

The day started well; I arrived in plenty of time. However, the gates to the industrial estate that houses [the studio] were firmly shut. Half an hour later (OK, so I may have allowed far too much leeway for the journey!) other vehicles started to arrive, including the studio manager, who promptly opened the gate and welcomed us in (and we were still 10 minutes ahead of time).

Wow again, the studio was huge, with a high ceiling and infinity walls on two adjoining sides.

As people arrived, it was easy to tell who were the other photographers (keen, but nervous), who were the models (tall, elegant and confident), who were crew (costumes, hair, make-up, video, lighting, all relaxed, confident and easy-going), and finally Stoney himself, already apologising for an (almost non-existent) delay while directing the positioning of both lighting and props.

From then on, for the next 8 hours, it was a non-stop rush. Everyone had a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the project and rapidly got acquainted. Everyone was buzzing.

On the first set, Stoney shot for 10 or so minutes before handing over to the attending photographers for their own 6–8 minutes of shooting. No one needed reminding that it was a group shoot, and everyone was very respectful of their allocated time.

As the sets progressed, rather than photographers clamouring to be first in line, people hung back to see what the others were shooting, with everyone (Stoney included) happy to show their images to anyone who asked. This raised everyone's game, as shots, angles and ideas were discussed and finessed. What an incredible feeling, and what a buzz to be a part of it.

The sets, poses and images continued to evolve until finally the last set had been shot. At this point, everyone joined forces to return the studio to its previous, immaculate state, before shaking hands, hugging and saying goodbye.

What a day!

I left absolutely shattered, but delighted with what I had learned and the images I took away. Was it worth the money? Yes, absolutely. It was, without a doubt, the most incredible photographic event I have ever attended, or been a part of.

Thank you to everyone involved, models, crew and photographers alike. What a day!
